The story behind the shell house
The history behind the fairytale shell house began back in 1949, when former farmer Alfred Nielsen purchased a plot of land in Thyborøn. He promised to construct a truly individual house on the land for his wife that travellers from near and far would come to see. Twenty-five years later the unique house had become a reality, decorated with thousands of seashells and snail shells. Today the house is home to an exhibition of exciting sea finds, a shop and café.

Fish auctions
For generations the fishing village of Thyborøn has been holding fish auctions for companies to buy fresh fish for production, restaurants, etc. As a tourist it can be both fun and interesting to watch the auctioneer oversee the whole process – although it can be impossible to follow what is going on. Fish auctions are also held for private individuals, when you can bid on family-friendly packages of fish rather than whole crates. Auctions are usually held on Wednesdays in July and August.
